Who needs Hollywood when you’ve got real life drama? Case in point: Big Oil (Exxon) and Big Auto (Chrysler) duking it out on who’s more to blame for Global Warming. Uh, hello, Pot? This is Kettle. You’re Black. In a private company blog (the link is no longer publically available) directed at journalists and analysts, Chrysler's Jason Vines attacked Exxon’s recent print ad. The campaign painted the Auto industry as the big polluters who should be blamed for global warming. While the finger pointing is going both ways, Daniel Becker, director of Sierra Club's global warming program, has just the right response to this emerging feud: "I'm happy to watch." "Each industry is right -- that the other is to blame for a big part of the problem. The auto industry continues to make gas-guzzling vehicles with antiquated technology rather than using modern, fuel-efficient technology," Becker said. "At the same time, the oil industry is perfectly happy to have people addicted to their product." When it comes to developing new technology, "Each of them wants to play 'After you, Alfonse' with the other," Becker said.
Another great point was brought up in a recent blog comment: “There is a serious history wanting to be written, about how the development of renewable sources of energy has been suppressed, stifled, dominated, controlled, by the big petroleum players. Along with their allies in coal and automobiles. Wind, solar, geo-thermal, tidal, etc., will never get anywhere, until the petroleum companies are sure they will come out ahead.” by Erin Swanson Eswanson@enviance.com |
