| June 02, 2006 | | Nuclear waste threatening champagne region has French senate voting on how best to deal with its storage problems | Is the future of our bubbly in trouble? Very soon the French Senate will be voting on a law dealing with the management of nuclear waste. Coincidentally, Greenpeace just published a study on nuclear waste storage in France. This study cites some underground water samples showing tritium, radioactive hydrogen, levels 90 times higher than European safety limits! Just 10 kilometers from the Champagne region, famous for its wine production, the study also found toxic and radioactive underground water. Frédéric Marillier of Greenpeace has warned the local vineyards of the danger to the region, with the possibility of more toxins leaking into the environment. Is there ever a safe place for nuclear disposal? Feel free to share your thoughts… by Cassandra Darwin CDarwin@enviance.com | | |
