Environmental Performance Scorecards

Get slides on how to set up your own environmental performance scorecards

I presented at a great AWMA conference last month in Atlanta, GA entitled, "Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability Metrics Workshop".

My environmental scorecards presentation raised some eyebrows among the participants.  It was politely called ‘forward thinking’ by the moderator of my panel, which is exactly what I was hoping for.  I wanted to introduce a new concept whose time will come - due to changes in technology.

Why Environmental Scorecards

Being able to produce an environmental performance “report card” or index is extremely valuable to EHS professionals and corporate folks alike.  However, their usefulness is limited unless there is a way to compare separate facilities, even if they belong to the same business.

For example, a corporate EHS VP would love to be able to compare Facility A to Facility B on an objective, transparent basis.  However, comparing the 2 facilities’ environmental footprint becomes tricky when you realize that they differ in age, they produce slightly different product, and have very different production methods.  How do you set up a fair scorecard for such different circumstances?

The presentation enclosed proposes a way to compare different facilities so that whoever needs or wants the information can have it.  This is the very definition of transparency, because it allows something useful to be viewed and understood that was not previously possible.  Companies that have a scoring system can use it to as an internal tool to reduce problems, increase performance, and adjust compensation.

Environmental Scorecards Presentation Slides

I talked our marketing department into giving you the slides without filling out a web registration form.  Check it out and see how I’ve weighted factors by program area and other criteria.
