| | | March 16, 2007 | | Auto industry fights possible new CAFE standards that combat climate change | Top auto-industry executives appeared on Capitol Hill this week to argue against tightening the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard that would help combat climate change. The standard has not changed for more than 30 years, and Congress is weighing proposals to boost efficiency rules. Company executives from GM, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, and Toyota made it clear that proposed increases in gas mileage standards for new vehicles would be extremely expensive and challenging. Environmentalists argue that boosting fuel economy in transportation would help reduce air pollution and help fight global warming / climate change. | | |
