| July 20, 2007 | | Japan shuts down its largest nuclear power plant indefinitely due to safety and environmental concerns | This week’s closing of Japan's largest nuclear power plant due to a 6.8 earthquake only underscores the arguments against nuclear power. In typical nuclear industry fashion, Tokyo Electric Power first claimed that the damage to the plant posed no danger to people or the environment. However after regulators found a fresh leak of radioactive material -- 50% more than previously reported -- and over 400 drums of radioactive waster fell over, the plant was closed indefinitely. Concerns about nuclear safety echoed across Japan, which depends on 55 reactors for about 30% of its electricity needs. And many voiced that nuclear power should be phased out. Here here. And no one beats the Onion for great 1-liners about stuff like this: "What a shame. In every other respect, that earthquake zone was the perfect place to build a nuclear reactor."
