London Reduces GHG and Makes a Profit

Burning the methane at a city dump is reducing GHG emissions and earning a profit for the city

London started burning off methane gas at a city dump, back in 2003 rather than releasing it into the atmosphere.  Methane gas is released as the organic matter decays at these landfills, and "has a global-warming potential 21 times greater than carbon dioxide."

London has already been paid about $120,000/year from their federal government for carbon reduction credits, as part of the UK's GHG emission reduction plan - working towards the Kyoto Protocol targets.

City officials say they could make as much as $1 million/year by participating in emissions trading markets like the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX).  Also up for consideration, is using the methane gas to produce elctricity for the city.
