China is Reducing Pollution for 2008 Olympics in Beijing

Preparing for the 2008 Summer Olympics, China is taking some drastic steps to reduce pollution and improve air quality.
2008 Summer Olympics

With the 2008 Summer Olympics quickly approaching, China is doing everything in its power to clean up.  Getting the most attention recently are the efforts to clean up the air pollution in a city plagued by a thick haze of smog.  The frenzy was heightened last week when the International Olympic Committee's president, Jacques Rogge, suggested that certain events during the competition may have to be postponed on days when the air conditions are especially bad.

Some of the clean-up efforts under way include:

  • Moving or closing 200 of the most noxious factories and power plants
  • Upgrading coal-fired power plants to reduce emissions
  • Building Beijing's first wind-power station
  • Upgrading vehicle emission standards
  • Planning to keep a large percentage of vehicles off the roads - testing is scheduled this weekend to order 1.3 million vehicles off the city streets
  • Putting a temporary halt on construction and closures of factories

China is clearly making an effort to host a successful Olympic event.  Do you think they can clean up the air by next summer?  Let me know what you think.
