New Report from NERC Covers GHG Mandates & Predicts Electricity Shortage

NERC's 2007 Long-Term Reliability Assessment covers GHG regulation and an increasing demand for power.

In a report released yesterday, the North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC) discusses the need to meet demand for power while still working to reduce GHG emissions:

"Regulations on Green House Gas emissions, notably CO2, are being promulgated by individual states and provinces throughout the U.S. and Canada. Under mandates in 25 states, clean energy, such as wind, solar and biomass, must be up to 30% of a utility's energy portfolio in five to 15 years. In 2003, just ten states had such requirements."

The forecast shows peak demand increasing by 18% (about 135,000 megawatts) for the U.S. over the next 10 years.  Over the same time period, reliable power is expected to increase 8.4% (about 77,000 megawatts).

This report also covers: the challenge of an aging workforce, regional reliability assessments and self-assessments, and supply issues.  There are some great figures, graphs, and charts in here - don't let the 237 pages scare you!
