Can the Climate Change be Linked to Future National Security Problems?

New report out from the intelligence agencies

There’s now another good reason for reducing green house gasses – and it could be the most important reason of all: High GHG = National Security problems for America. A recent report by the intelligence agencies says that global warming probably will mean more illegal immigration and humanitarian disasters. What else could happen? Less than stable governments become even shakier and a general increase in global terrorism. And we thought that lowering GHG’s was just good for the environment.

"Logic suggests the conditions exacerbated (by climate change) would increase the pool of potential recruits for terrorism," said Tom Fingar, deputy director of national intelligence for analysis.

Which areas are most vulnerable to drought, flooding and other catastrophic issues? Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Central and Southeast Asia. The assessment warns of a global spillover from increased migration and water-related disputes.

The report goes on to say that climate change could increase the levels of poverty, disease, migration and hunger, creating destabilizing conditions. Perhaps it’s time we take GHG reduction seriously?
