China Starting to Act? Large Asian Companies Join Emissions-Reduction Group

Big News from Most Populous Nation on Earth

While many agree that we are in a global climate problem, all would agree that China is a big part of the equation. With the largest population on earth and hundreds of coal burning power plants, their participation in the GHG solution is absolutely critical to solving the issue. This week, big news came out of China that hints at a possible full scale effort to join the global GHG community. China Mobile, the world's biggest mobile phone operator, joined an international agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions, possibly paving the way for other Chinese big businesses to join the group.

The London-based nonprofit Climate Group last week also announced the membership of two other Chinese companies: Suntech, the world's third-largest solar energy supplier, and Broad Air Conditioning, a leading manufacturer of non-electric air conditioning units. This is great news, especially since the fact that they are “new technology” type companies who would normally be committed to solving the crisis.

China Mobile has initially agreed to its reduce energy intensity 40 percent a year, double the national target. Other companies in China have applied to join the Climate Group, said the organization's CEO, Steve Howard. Of the 100 to 150 companies the Climate Group is targeting, about 20 are in China.

Let’s hope this fuels the participation of many other Chinese based multi-national companies! A global problem requires a global solution.

Helping China Clean Up

Transfer of Technology is Key to Helping China Advance
While there are many risks in transferring environmental technologies to China, sustained progress can only be achieved when it develops and grows from within. The magazine we publish, Pollution Engineering, has been helping grow environmental technical knowledge for a number of years. We've been criticized by some and heralded by others. Either way, it is right to help the world's largest polluter understand the latest technologies to help clean up their mess.
