| | February 04, 2010 | | At this week's EUEC conference in Phoenix, we surveyed 117 industry executives at random on controversial energy topics ranging from readiness to record carbon emissions to reactions to Obama’s State of the Union address.
We found clear divisions in response to greenhouse gas legislation and only a small number of companies prepared to report and manage carbon emissions, despite high awareness of pending regulations from the EPA and SEC. Here are our key findings:
Systems in Place: A surprising 61% of companies surveyed responded that they have no current system in place to record carbon emissions.
SEC Reporting: In regards to the new guidance to be promulgated by the SEC for disclosure of climate changed-related risk (as detailed in President Obama's State of the Union Address), 44% of respondents voiced support for the guidance and related carbon reporting while 56% disagreed that such reporting was necessary. The results show a clearly divided opinion on the issue.
Cap & Trade or Tax:
When asked about the impact of the setting a price on carbon via either cap and trade or tax, 46% of respondents commented that their company will need to dramatically reduce their GHG emissions in response to such an event.
Prioritizing GHG: Half of respondents indicated their company’s desire to implement green best practices as the primary driver behind prioritizing GHG compliance, while only 34% indicated federal legislation as the reason.
