Walking the Nuclear Energy Tight Rope

Debate continues on the advantages of nuclear energy

Is it me or is there more talk about nuclear energy use lately?  As California just signed a bill mandating caps on greenhouse gas emissions, even some environmentalists are throwing the nuke word around as a way to combat the global warming crisis.  Patrick Moore, co-founder of Greenpeace, said that wind and solar power aren’t enough to meet the U.S.’s energy needs and that environmentalists must be realistic.

On one hand, I agree that many “environmentalists” often take issues to extremes, but I have to side with them when it comes to nuclear power.  If inadequate safety measures aren’t enough to quell the idea of adding more nuclear power plants to our landscape, then factor in waste disposal issues and enormous costs for building additional plants that will eventually be the tax payers’ problem.  Well, we’ll always have higher taxes, but I’d rather be taxed for funding alternative energy initiatives than on a source notorious for safety, health, and environmental violations.
